Closeboard Fencing York

Closeboard fencing uses vertical boards nailed or screwed to horizontal arris rails between posts. Boards meet edge to edge, giving a solid face without the gaps found in lap panels. It is widely used on rear boundaries in York for privacy on terraced and semi-detached plots.

Construction details

Posts are typically 100 mm × 100 mm for runs up to 1.8 m, set in concrete. Gravel boards protect the bottom of the boards from soil contact on clay-heavy ground. Capping rail optional.

Compare with feather edge fencing, where boards overlap rather than meet flush.

Frequently asked questions

How does closeboard differ from feather edge?

Closeboard boards abut for a completely solid face. Feather edge boards overlap slightly; feather edge is often lower cost but less completely opaque.

What maintenance does closeboard need?

Pressure-treated timber needs less immediate treatment than untreated wood. Periodic stain or oil extends appearance; we note treatment state in the quote.

Is closeboard suitable for narrow side passages?

Yes, where width allows standard post centres. Narrow snickels between terraced houses in Holgate and South Bank are measured on site to confirm bay layout.

How is closeboard priced in York?

Price depends on line length, post size, ground preparation and access. We provide an itemised written quote before work is scheduled.

Are gravel boards recommended on York clay soil?

Yes. Gravel boards lift the board face above damp clay and alluvial soil, extending the life of the fence on plots across Acomb, Fulford and other districts with moisture-retentive ground.
